Cat Food

I don't know if this was talked about before but I was thinking about vegan cat food for a little while, I did some research and I know that cats are obligate carnivores but I have read about people feeding cats certin vegan cat food and they have been fine. Some have also lived longer and helped them with weight issues. I have been looking at Ami's has anyone tried that?
If not vegan cat food, then what is the best meat-based cat food you have found? I would like to try Newman's but I am looking for something more in my price range right now. Is there any healthy, natural, not factory farmed food out there that's cheaper?
I was also thinking about feeding them homemade food. Is there a difference price wise between buying free-range, "cruelty free" meat making it myself and buying it already prepared?
Anyone have recipes? Thanks.

metallic taste?

Hey everybody, I have been vegan for about three weeks, and today I realized I get this weird feeling when I haven't eaten in a while.... and then I realized it's a metallic taste in my mouth.
I brush regularly, I have not been eating very much, however, and lately when I do eat it's usually bread.
I have been having the symptoms of polycystic ovaries but I haven't gotten it check out, and I have had a sore on the corners of my mouth that is slowly going away since I got a steroid shot for it last week.

I feel weak and dizzy and metal mouth when I'm hungry.

I'm thinking maybe it's an iron deficiency or something? Anybody know what could help? I gotta admit being a beginner vegan I have not always made the healthiest choices when it comes to what I'm eating, so I thought maybe you guys could give me some nutritional advice if nothing else. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

Animal Rescue

My husband and I have developed the website Rescue Meow. It's currently taking up most of my free time, and I hope that it will always be a priority. This site is dedicated to all of our rescued pets; it's a blog which we hope (for the future) to use in the thought of connecting animals who desperately need homes to good and loving people. I ask that you please visit our site, tell your friends, send us stories, and keep us in mind. Photos are appreciated, but optional; no language or length restrictions. Write us to your heart's content!

Protein question

So I have a really stupid question, but just bare with me.  If my period is still a regular period, and my head hair and leg hair is growing as fast as it used to when I ate meat, is it semi-safe to assume that I'm getting enough protein?  Because when I first went vegetarian and didn't really know what I was doing, I noticed that my leg hair wasn't growing as fast as normal.  But now (2 years as a vegan)  it seems to be almost what it used to be (perhaps it doesn't grow quite as quickly, but close), my hair on my head grows as fast as it did back then, and my period is as heavy as it used to be.  Maybe I'm just crazy (good possibility) but it seems to me like protein would play a part in this.  Or am I wrong?   I don't have the attention span to keep track of what I eat, so I was hoping that this could tell me if I'm doing ok.

PMS issues

So this is a rather woman-y question, so I'm very glad I found this site!  I have been vegan for about two years, and I'm 23.  The past six months or so, I have been having some problems during PMS.  When I first got my period, I basically didn't have PMS, and then I gradually started developing it the past few years.  But now, at the start of my PMS (it seems to last about 2 1/2 weeks now) I feel like I'm getting a bladder infection, and then right before my period starts for a little over a week, I feel like I'm getting a yeast infection.  I don't know if this has anything to do with my being vegan and not getting enough of certain kinds of nutrients, so I thought I would ask and see if any of you have had similar PMS troubles.

Thanks!

Getting what he deserves......
http://blogs.app.com/saywhat/2009/01/26/raccoon-bites-off-mans-manhood-in-rape-attack/

If you don't want to click:
Russian doctors are trying to restore a Moscow man’s manhood after an angry raccoon bit off his penis as he was trying to rape the animal.

Alexander Kirilow told surgeons he thought he’d “have some fun” when he saw the raccoon during a drunken weekend with pals, according to the Sun.

The feisty animal wasn’t going to have any of it and turned on the man, biting off part of his penis in retaliation.

Doctor’s told the 44-year-old they could restore the function of what’s left of his member, but they couldn’t sew back on what the raccoon bit off.

Looking for Veg-Friendly Doc (NYC)

Hi there, I just recently moved to the NYC area and I am searching for a primary care physician. There is a huge list under my insurance and I hate just picking a name at random. Does anyone have any recommendations for a doctor in Manhattan who is supportive of the vegan lifestyle? Male or female. I work in Rockefeller, so close to there would be great but anywhere in midtown or an easy subway ride from Rockefeller is fine.

Thanks for your help!

Question about dress fabrics

I'm being bridesmaid for my cousin in October and I'm having trouble working out what fabrics I can choose from. Of course silk is a no-no, but it seems that silk can be called a lot of different things. For example, one dress I liked the look of online was chiffon and I thought that was going to be fine but when I googled "chiffon fabric + vegan" I learned that it's a type of woven silk. It seems like silk is in a lot of fabrics that I didn't realise! What I'm after is some sort of list or info on fabrics I CAN wear, so I can go shopping armed with the correct info.

So far when doing a general search for vegan bridesmaid dresses the results are much more casual styles than I need to find, like hemp fabrics or cotton dresses. If it were my wedding that's the sort of stuff I'd like, but because I'm dressing to the bride's tastes and not my own, I need to find something she likes that suits the setting - it's a fairly traditional country wedding.

Oh, I'm in Sydney Australia and if anyone just happens to know of somewhere good to look locally that would be even better!

Veg*n Community for Floridians!

Hey Everyone,

I hope this is allowed (and if it's not, let me know so I may delete it). I have just started a new community called sunshine_veg for those of us living in the state of Florida looking for a more local vegetarian/vegan community. I've made it in hopes of finding and lending support to other individuals in the Florida area who have either already become vegetarian/vegan or are looking for more information in order to become veg*n. Whether you live in Pensacola or Key West, you are MORE than welcome to join the community so long as you are a Floridian with an active interest in veg*nism!

Positive veg*ns only, troublemakers need not apply.

Hope you all join and tell your friends! Spread the word so we can make this community great! :)

Armour Thyroid

I looked in the memories and didn't see this covered...

*Cringe* I'm nervous to even ask this. For about a year, my doc has had me on Armour thyroid (yep, armour as in the hotdog..ugh) because it's the most "natural and easiest to absorb." (I'm hypothyroid.)

I asked about switching to a vegetarian thyroid prescription. I was told that the vegetarian option was to take two different meds rather than the one (Armour), and she didn't recommend it.

I don't know much about the other options, but I have a doctor's appointment next week and would like to have an informed discussion with my doc about switching.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

anemia and bleeding?

Hi all,

I'm vegan and usually get enough iron (at least I think so), but this month I have not eaten enough in general let alone enough iron for entirely irrelevant reasons. This month, I have also been bleeding constantly (period-like). A friend of mine who's vegetarian is also having the same problem this month- she's anemic and hasn't taken supplements this month. Anemia can be the cause or the result of bleeding, as it can decrease blood clotting because of a lack of iron or you can lose iron in blood and get anemia. I have a doctor's appointment, but I was wondering if any of you have had this problem before. I don't like bringing up being vegan with doctors, as they are always quick to say "start eating meat" and blame everything on being vegan. Obviously, it could be a number of other things, but I'd just like to see if this is a pattern with being vegan/vegetarian and not getting enough iron.

Note: I do know how to get iron and am now cramming as many lentils, spinach, broccoli, and beans into me as I can. So I am taking measures to prevent anemia if I have it.

Intro + a question

Hello ladies! My name is Erica and I've been vegan for a couple of months now. I'm a SAHM with a 4yr old and 6 month old. I am currently breastfeeding and losing A LOT of weight. I lost weight while breastfeeding my first, but not this much. I'm not realy sure how much i've lost, but my pre-preg jeans barely stay on and my belts all hang loose on the smallest setting. Some of my family members have actually expressed concern. I'm going to start taking what prenatals I have left (though, they're probably not vegan. I'll try to find a vegan alternative when they're gone.), but i was just wondering if there are any supplements that are necessary while nursing or for vegan women in general. I have an appt. with my midwife on Monday and I'm nervous about what she'll say about my weight loss and veganism while breastfeeding. Also what foods should I have in my diet to keep weight on? Avocados? Olive oil? What else?

TIA
